Respect (Scrum value)

One of the five Scrum values: Scrum Team members respect each other to be capable, independent people.

What it means

Respect underlies self-management: trusting Developers to decide how they work requires respecting their competence and judgment, rather than micromanaging their process.

It also shapes how feedback is given, particularly during the Sprint Retrospective, where honest critique of process and outcomes should not become personal criticism of individuals.

Common mistakes

Respect extends to acknowledging different specialties and perspectives within a cross-functional team, where no single discipline is treated as more important than another.

Example

During a heated Retrospective, the team focuses feedback on the process, not on blaming the Developer who wrote the bug.
