Grooming

An older, now less common name for Product Backlog Refinement, the ongoing activity of adding detail and order to backlog items.

What it means

'Grooming' was the term used in earlier versions of the Scrum Guide and remains common in everyday team language, especially in Russian- and Bulgarian-speaking practitioner communities, though the current Scrum Guide uses 'Refinement.'

The activity itself is unchanged: clarifying requirements, adding estimates, and ordering the Product Backlog so upcoming items are ready for Sprint Planning.

Common mistakes

Some teams schedule a recurring 'grooming session' as a lightweight, informal version of Refinement rather than treating it as a mandatory ceremony.

Example

A Russian-speaking team still calls their weekly Refinement session 'груминг' out of habit from earlier Scrum Guide versions.
