LeSS (Large-Scale Scrum)

A scaling framework that applies Scrum's principles, largely unchanged, to multiple teams working on one product, favoring simplicity over added roles.

What it means

LeSS is not part of the official Scrum Guide, though it explicitly tries to stay close to Scrum's original rules rather than adding new layers of process. It defines two configurations: LeSS for two to eight teams, and LeSS Huge for larger scale.

In LeSS, there remains a single Product Backlog and a single Product Owner across all teams, with shared Sprint Reviews and coordinated Sprint Planning, minimizing new roles compared to other scaling frameworks.

Common mistakes

LeSS emphasizes reducing organizational complexity itself, such as removing unnecessary component teams, rather than adding coordination roles to manage that complexity.

Example

Four feature teams share one Product Backlog and one Product Owner under a LeSS structure instead of splitting by component.
